Bali needs little introduction. Indonesia's most famous island has been drawing travellers for decades with its mix of ancient temples, lush rice terraces, world-class surf breaks and a laid-back island rhythm that's hard to find anywhere else in Southeast Asia. But Bali is bigger and more varied than most people expect — and a little planning goes a long way toward making the most of your trip.
Here's everything you need to know before you go.
Best Time to Visit Bali
Bali has two seasons: dry (April to October) and wet (November to March). The dry season is the most popular time to visit, with sunny days and lower humidity — especially July and August, which also happen to be the busiest and most expensive months.
If you don't mind the odd afternoon shower, the shoulder months of April, May, June and September offer a great balance: fewer crowds, better prices, and still mostly good weather. The wet season isn't a washout either — rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day downpours, and you'll find some of the best hotel deals of the year.
Where to Stay
Bali's regions each have a distinct personality, so where you base yourself matters:
Seminyak and Canggu are ideal for travellers who want beach clubs, boutique shopping and a buzzing café scene, with Canggu having a slightly more laid-back, surf-town feel.
Ubud, inland and surrounded by rice paddies, is the choice for anyone drawn to yoga, wellness retreats, art markets and a quieter pace.
Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula sit on dramatic clifftops in the south, known for their surf breaks and postcard sunsets.
Nusa Dua is the most polished, family-friendly area, home to many of the island's large resort properties and calm swimming beaches.
Many travellers split their trip across two or three of these areas rather than staying in just one, since each offers such a different experience.
Top Places to Visit
Tanah Lot and Uluwatu Temple — two of Bali's most photographed sea temples, both perched dramatically on rock formations above the ocean. Sunset is the best time to visit either.
Tegallalang Rice Terraces — the emerald-green stepped rice fields near Ubud are one of the most recognisable images of Bali, and best visited early morning before the crowds and heat build up.
Mount Batur — a sunrise trek up this active volcano is one of Bali's most popular experiences. It's a moderately challenging hike, usually starting around 3-4am, but the views from the summit are worth the early start.
Nusa Penida — a short boat ride from Bali's east coast, this island is home to some of the region's most striking coastal scenery, including the famous Kelingking Beach viewpoint.
Ubud Monkey Forest and the Ubud Art Market — a good pairing for a half day, combining nature with local crafts and souvenirs.
A Few Practical Tips
Traffic in southern Bali (especially Seminyak, Canggu and Denpasar) can be heavier than visitors expect, so it's worth building extra time into your plans when moving between areas — a short-looking distance on a map can easily take 45 minutes to an hour.
Dress modestly when visiting temples; a sarong is usually required and can typically be borrowed or rented at the entrance for a small fee.
Bali's tap water isn't safe to drink — stick to bottled or filtered water, which is widely available everywhere.
Getting an eSIM or local SIM card on arrival makes navigation, ride-hailing apps and staying connected much easier throughout your trip.
