The Char Dham Yatra — covering Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — is one of India's most significant Hindu pilgrimages, and also one of the more logistically demanding trips to plan well. Here's a checklist to help you prepare.
The Yatra is typically open from late April or early May through October or November, depending on weather and snow conditions each year. Exact opening and closing dates vary annually and are announced closer to the season, so it's worth confirming current dates before finalising your travel plans.
Char Dham Yatra registration is mandatory and is done online through Uttarakhand's official tourism portal. This should be completed well in advance, as daily pilgrim numbers are sometimes capped at each shrine.
The Yatra involves significant walking and, for Kedarnath in particular, a trek (or pony/helicopter option) to reach the temple at altitude. It's worth building some general fitness in the weeks before your trip, and consulting a doctor if you have any pre-existing health conditions, particularly heart or respiratory issues, given the altitude involved.
Most pilgrims follow the traditional order: Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, then Badrinath — though some choose to reverse this depending on their starting point and transport arrangements. The full circuit typically takes ten to twelve days when done comfortably by road.
Warm layers regardless of season, as temperatures at these altitudes remain cool even in summer. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, a light raincoat or poncko for sudden weather changes, and any personal medication, since pharmacy access is limited in these remote areas.
Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses to more comfortable hotels in larger towns like Rishikesh and Haridwar, becoming simpler as you approach each shrine itself. Booking in advance during peak season (May-June and September-October) is strongly recommended.
Kedarnath is the most physically demanding of the four, requiring a trek from Gaurikund (or a helicopter option for those unable to trek). It's worth deciding on your approach well in advance, as helicopter slots in particular fill up quickly.
Given the registration requirements, altitude considerations and route logistics involved, the Char Dham Yatra benefits from being planned with more lead time than a typical holiday.
At Mannhit Vacations, our Char Dham Yatra packages handle registration, accommodation and route planning, so you can focus on the pilgrimage itself. Get in touch and we'll help you plan a well-organised, comfortable Yatra.
