Ladakh Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

← Back to Blog

Ladakh occupies a landscape unlike anywhere else in India — a high-altitude desert of stark mountains, turquoise lakes and centuries-old monasteries, once known primarily to trekkers and bikers but increasingly popular with a wider range of travellers.

Here's everything you need to know before you go.

Best Time to Visit Ladakh

Ladakh is accessible by road and open to most tourism between May and September, when mountain passes are clear of snow and temperatures are manageable. June to August is peak season, with the most reliable weather and full access to Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley.

Outside this window, Ladakh becomes largely inaccessible by road due to snow, though flights to Leh continue year-round — a small number of specialised winter trips (including the famous Chadar frozen river trek) operate in January and February for well-prepared travellers.

Where to Go

Leh is Ladakh's main town and the starting point for most trips, home to Leh Palace, several monasteries, and the region's main airport.

Pangong Lake, a few hours from Leh, is Ladakh's most famous landmark — a vast, high-altitude lake that shifts through shades of blue and turquoise depending on the light.

Nubra Valley, reached via the Khardung La pass, offers a striking contrast of sand dunes and snow-capped peaks, along with double-humped Bactrian camels.

Alchi and Lamayuru are home to some of Ladakh's oldest and most significant monasteries, with Lamayuru's dramatic "moonland" landscape being particularly striking.

Most itineraries spend the first day or two acclimatising in Leh before heading out to Pangong and Nubra Valley.

Top Things to Do

Pangong Lake at sunrise or sunset — the changing light across the lake's surface is one of Ladakh's most photographed sights.

Khardung La pass — one of the highest motorable passes in the world, en route to Nubra Valley, with sweeping views in clear weather.

Nubra Valley camel safari — a ride on the region's double-humped Bactrian camels across the Hunder sand dunes.

Thiksey and Hemis Monasteries — among Ladakh's most significant Buddhist monasteries, with Thiksey's tiered architecture often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa.

Leh Palace and Old Town — a nine-story former royal palace overlooking Leh, with the old town's narrow lanes worth exploring on foot.

A Few Practical Tips

Altitude sickness is a genuine concern in Ladakh, with Leh itself sitting above 3,500 metres — it's strongly recommended to spend at least one full day acclimatising before travelling to higher areas like Khardung La or Pangong Lake.

Inner Line Permits are required for several areas including Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley — these are usually arranged through your hotel or tour operator in Leh.

Mobile connectivity is limited to certain networks and can be patchy outside Leh, so it's worth informing family of your route in advance.

Temperatures drop significantly after sunset even in summer, so warm layers are essential regardless of when you visit.

Planning Your Trip

Ladakh rewards travellers who build in acclimatisation time and don't try to cover too much too quickly — the altitude and distances involved mean a rushed itinerary can take away from the experience rather than adding to it.

At Mannhit Vacations, our Ladakh holiday packages are built around proper acclimatisation, permit arrangements and a well-paced route across the region's highlights. Get in touch and we'll help you plan a Ladakh trip that accounts for the altitude and logistics involved.
