Winter in Kashmir means genuinely cold temperatures, especially in Gulmarg and other higher-altitude areas, so packing properly makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the trip. Here's what to bring.
Rather than one heavy jacket, pack for layering — a thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer (fleece or wool sweater), and a windproof, waterproof outer jacket. This combination handles both indoor heated spaces and outdoor snow activities far better than a single bulky coat.
Thermal innerwear (top and bottom) for both daytime and sleeping, at least two to three warm sweaters or fleece layers, a heavy, windproof and waterproof jacket, and thick woollen socks — pack more pairs than you think you'll need, since staying dry matters as much as staying warm.
Waterproof, insulated snow boots with good grip are essential, particularly for Gulmarg. Regular sneakers or city shoes won't hold up well in snow and slush.
Woollen gloves (waterproof if possible), a warm cap or beanie covering your ears, a scarf or neck gaiter, and sunglasses — snow glare is intense on sunny days and can cause real eye strain without protection.
Cold, dry mountain air can be tough on skin — pack a heavy moisturiser, lip balm with SPF, and sunscreen, since UV exposure is still significant at altitude even in winter.
A small backpack for day trips, a power bank (cold weather drains phone batteries faster), and any personal medication, since pharmacy access can be more limited in smaller towns like Gulmarg or Pahalgam.
Heavy formal wear or anything that isn't warm and practical — Kashmir in winter is not the trip for it, and luggage space is better used for extra thermal layers.
If you're travelling with rented winter gear included in your package (common for activities like skiing in Gulmarg), you can pack lighter on bulky items like snow boots and heavy jackets specifically for those activities.
At Mannhit Vacations, our Kashmir winter packages include guidance on exactly what to pack and, where relevant, arrange rented winter gear for activities like skiing. Get in touch and we'll help make sure you're properly prepared for the cold.
